- West Indies 5-179 def. England 4-164
Summary:What an awesome decision by the West Indies to bat first. Johnson Charles (84) and Chris Gayle (58) blasted the English bowlers all over the ground. The opening partnership finished on 103 when Steven Finn redeemed himself by catching Chris Gayle in the deep after dropping Johnson Charles the previous ball. Unfortunately, besides the two openers, everyone else failed to fire with the bat. Despite this, the West Indies posted a respectable figure of 179.
England had a steep task ahead of them chasing down 179. It could not have been a worse start for the Poms with Craig Kieswetter making a duck before the English could get a run on the board. Luke Wright was gone the next ball leaving them 2-0. Ravi Rampaul collected both wickets in the first over and set the tone for the fielding side. Alex Hales (68) and Eoin Morgan (71*) steadied the Poms but it wasn't enough to win, falling short with 4-164.
West Indies won by 15 runs.
Stats Watch:
West Indies - Johnson Charles' 10 fours and 3 sixes are hard to go past. He started slowly with Chris Gayle reaching 50 quite quickly (just 29 balls) but caught up and kept the big hitting going after Gayles dismissal.
- Ravi Rampaul's first over was exactly what the West Indies needed. He finished with 2 for 37 and a maiden.
England - Eoin Morgan could have won the Poms the match provided he had more time. 71 runs off 36 balls with a strike rate of 197.22 is an extremely good effort. He also scored more sixes (5) than fours (4).
- Stuart Broad did well with the ball. 2 for 26 off 4 overs including a maiden.
England had 41 dot balls to the West Indies 50. The West Indies still posted a larger score by hitting 9 more fours than their opposition.
Who's Hot:
The West Indies fielders.
Andre Russell caught the ball in the air over the midwicket boundary before throwing it back into play before he landed to save what looked to be a guaranteed six to Morgan. Sammy was another who saved four by diving full length and turning it into a three.
Chris Gayle and Charles Johnson are hot! Chris Gayle equalled Brendan McCullum for most 50's in T20.
Eoin Morgan was on fire with the bat, too bad he didn't come in earlier.
What it means:
After only one game the West Indies sit atop Group 1. The hot favourites for Group 1 were Sri Lanka and England but this upset will shake up the whole group. West Indies will hope for a win of New Zealand and could well make it out of this group on top depending on their form against the Sri Lankan's.
As for the English, this loss puts them in a tough position. With must-win games against New Zealand and Sri Lanka, they could very well see themselves knocked out of the group.
